Years ago, some hard drive controllers, as well as older versions of the Windows and Mac operating systems, could not accomodate a hard drive partition larger than 2 GB. If you had a hard drive larger than 2GB, you needed multiple partitions to make use of the full capacity of the drive. A partition is nothing more than a way to organize the physical space on a hard drive. We typically think of a hard drive as a single disk, but partitioning allows you to split a hard drive so it appears to be multiple different drives.
- The box beneath 'Partition Layout' or 'Volume Scheme:' (which should be set to Current) represents your hard disk, where occupied space is shaded. With the handle at the bottom-right of each partition, you can resize the partition by dragging the handle up or down. To add or remove partitions, click the + (plus sign) or -(minus sign) beneath.
- When you set up a new hard drive or buy a computer, the drive likely comes with a single partition. This places everything onto one logical sector of the drive. But you can easily create partitions to keep different types of data separate. Here's what you should know about partitioning and the benefits and drawbacks of doing so.
I am committing to new Macbook after years of desktop Mac & Mac Pro editing. Specs are 2.2GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM-2x4GB, 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 RPM
Question is - I do 90% of work on video editing, motion, photoshop etc. So should I partition hard drive separation of video files? With only 500g in box I will be transferring a lot of files back and forth from exterior drives for projects.
Thanx in advance!
(I am flashing back to G3 w/ Media 100 - painful days)
